■ Brandon Ward of Winston-Salem is off to a strong start in his first season on the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour.
He finished sixth and was the highest-finishing rookie in the season opener March 21 at Concord Speedway.
"We had problems with our power steering all day at Concord," Ward said in a statement. "We thought we had it fixed but we had more problems during the race and were still able to come home with a good finish."
Ward plans on running the entire season on the Whelen Southern Modified Tour, which will resume Saturday night at South Boston, Va. He has made a handful of starts on the tour in recent years, and competed at South Boston in the former NASCAR Goody's Dash Series. Ward also plans to run in the USAR Pro Cup Series this year.
